Hello there,
This is Bruna, and I’m excited to give you a personal introduction to our project: Bossa Coffee Company, emphasising it’s essence as a personal project grounded in strong farmer and roaster relationships.
In a world where we are all trying to make a difference, the coffee industry constantly searches for the most impactful way to do so. It’s a challenge we resonate deeply with. The ongoing debate in green trading and roasting involves questions like: fostering direct relationships, prioritising vertical integration, exclusively supporting smallholders versus supporting larger farms and how to bring something impactful back to origin? As a small team, we’ve chosen to focus on vertical integration, believing it to be a genuine way of making a real impact on producing communities.
Growing up in a small coffee town in Brazil, surrounded by friends and family engaged in different aspects of the coffee industry, I’ve been privileged with an international career in coffee. Now positioned at the consuming end of the coffee supply chain, I find myself in a position to represent the voices of farmers.
Bossa Coffee Company aims to challenge the conventional, colonial dynamics of the coffee trade, supporting a shift from simply buying coffee from suppliers to sourcing from those who import from their own communities – a trend we’re happy to see increasing.
In 2018, Emma and I crossed paths while working for the same coffee company. Our shared values and profound respect for each other’s work created a partnership built on similar life views and a mutual commitment to the wellbeing of the entire coffee chain from farm workers to baristas, and the many other people involved in the supply chain.
Having both faced burnout and contemplating leaving the coffee industry completely, initially attributing the challenges to the industry itself rather than problematic employers, we made an important decision. We chose to create the company we wanted to work for and to start fresh again. That’s where the name Bossa comes from: Brazilian artists coming together to simplify music and do it in a different way.
Our goal is simple yet profound – driven by a desire to be honest and supportive within the coffee community. We aim to bring genuinely delicious, consistent coffees to the market, sourced from friends, family, and relationships cultivated over two decades of combined coffee experience. While our business model doesn’t promise radical change, we aspire to be authentic, to listen, to live off our passion, and make small differences that collectively contribute to our communities to meet each other’s needs.
So, let’s have a chat. Let’s taste coffees together, discuss what needs to be different, and work towards this subtle yet profound change. Coffee connects us, and through shared experiences, we have the power to reshape narratives. Reach out, join us on this journey, and let’s bring meaningful change together.
